Starry Starry Night

Yesterday a friend and I were chatting in the bus and she told me about their photography club and how their new theme for the week is ‘Night’ and so I immediately cracked a joke about cheating and making cupcakes with stars on them and then just taking a picture of that. She thought I was kidding...

Challenge Accepted.

I am by no means the next great baker, that I truly and honestly know but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy baking from time to time, I’ve never attempted something like this before though and I should have known it would end badly.

Firstly I mixed the batter, which was not originally made to be cupcake batter but it just tastes so good so I decided to see how versatile it is. I did not take into account that it might not work completely as cupcake batter at all... I wish I had. What followed was quite amusing.

Siiighh. So I cut out all the bits that malformed them and made them cupcake shape, my brother then swooped in and ate some of the bits I cut off, every now and then coming back for more and eyeing my newly cupcake-shaped cupcakes. This is about the time that I realized I did not have enough of the correct ingredients to make the icing and with my brother on the prowl I had to make some sort of defense mechanism to protect my precious cupcakes.

Yes, I figured out that cupcakes without icing would indeed be naked, also known as muffins...

When I finally got everything for the icing, it was time to make it... only problem is the colourant I wanted to use, sucked. It’s supposed to be black and then da da daaa low and behold:

Not black. Then I added some violet colour, burgundy, royal blue, some other red and more black. Thus:

Still not black. Repeat the process.

Again. Not black. Repeat again.

Close enough, I’m getting tired of this. At this moment I thought my hands were already dirty...

I stared decorating the cupcakes and it was all going well until I ran out of icing and needed to make more. Siiiiigggghhh. Again with the throwing in random colours and hoping they turn out black.
Didn’t happen.

Eventually I finished and I was rather proud! They looked so pretty, my Midnight Cupcakes.

I was planning on stopping here but the cleaning process was also rather comical.

After packing taking a breath of relief that I was almost finished, I looked down at my hands...

Fantastic, this nonsense stains I tell you. It looks like people have been taking my fingerprints all day. So I decided to just rinse everything off so it won’t stain and look like my hands. The water looked awesome.

It reminded me of Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ but moving on, I tossed out that water and put in clean water, then this happened and it looked so creepy to me I just had to take a picture.

As much as I love sugar, I couldn’t resist eating some of the icing, which I now very much regret doing...

Sigh again. Oh well, I could just tell people that I ate a whole lot of lollipops. But the cleaning process is not yet over! I had to wipe off the counters and watch this white rag turn into a lot of different colours. Starting with blue and ending with purple. So not millions of colours but still, I had to rinse it out a few times. At one point I wiped off the table and the cloth turned red... odd. I rinsed it out and wiped the counter, then it turned red again. Confused, I confirmed that none of the cupcakes were bleeding and then I proceeded to check if it was, in fact, myself who was bleeding. I was not... Unable to find the source of the red stuff, I just continued cleaning. At this point it is now dark, very dark outside and seeing as I started out in the morning, I hadn’t eaten all day. I had only been snacking all day of icing and cupcake batter, I can almost feel the blood in my veins turning into red coloured icing sugar...

And now I shall sit down and enjoy a nice plate of spaghetti.
